A6MARR Improvement Works on the A34

A6 to Manchester Airport Relief Road (A6MARR) works are currently underway improving the A34’s junctions with the B5094 Stanley Road and A555. Improvements are needed at these junctions to accommodate the predicted increase in traffic flows in this area following the introduction of the A6MARR.  The proposals also include enhanced facilities for pedestrians and cyclists, including cycle lanes and traffic light controlled crossing points.

Traffic management in the form of narrow lanes and lanes closures will be required at various times during the improvement works to ensure that they can be undertaken as safely and efficiently as possible.

Where feasible, we will carry out works at night time and during the off peak hours to improve traffic flow at the busiest times.

The traffic management put in place is agreed in advance with the local highway authorities, Stockport and Cheshire East councils. Whilst there may at time be delays to journeys, we are working to minimise disruption as much as possible.

The traffic management on the A34 is expected to remain in place until Summer 2017.

Weekly updates on the traffic management in place as part of the A6MARR works is provided at the top of this web page. Further  information about the works planned to take place in this area over the coming months can be found on the local area update page.

When complete, the works will see the following upgrades made to the junctions:

A34/ B5094 Stanley Road Roundabout:

  • Additional traffic lanes will be provided on approaches to the junction;
  • Traffic lights will be introduced on each arm of the junction to better manage the flow of traffic and provide controlled crossing points for pedestrians and cyclists;
  • Controlled pedestrian and cycle crossing points will be provided on the A34 north and south arms of the junctions.

The plans of this junction that were submitted as part of the planning application for the A6MARR can be found on the planning application website.

A34/ A555 Junction:

  • Additional traffic lanes will be provided on approaches to the junction;
  • Traffic lights will be introduced on each arm of the junction to better manage the flow of traffic and provide controlled crossing points for pedestrians and cyclists;
  • Controlled pedestrian and cycle crossing points will be provided that will allow pedestrians and cyclists to cross the junction from north to south and west to east, and join the new shared footway/ cycleway that is being added along the full length of the existing A555.

The plans of this junction that were submitted as part of the planning application for the A6MARR can be found on the planning application website.

The A34 is also being widened between the two junctions to provide an additional lane for traffic in the north and southbound direction.

We will ensure that the local community is kept updated throughout the works and are committed to minimising the impact of the A6MARR construction on the local community.
